CMO: Cetyl Myristoleate
'A natural treatment for arthritis and other joint-related diseases'
Rita Elkins

This informative little booklet 'provides vital information on CMO including how CMO works, its primary applications, and how it's used in therapy for joint-related problems…'

The author gives an interesting history of CMO and how Cetyl Myristoleate was discovered to be a joint protector against arthritis, and she provides a surprisingly detailed background (for such a small book) into Osteoarthritis and describes the science behind how Certyl Myristoleate works (in easy to grasp language).

She explains the standard treatments for Osteoarthritis – including NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) including their side effects, which the author thinks may ultimately be counter-productive in managing the disease. 'NSAIDs come with a host of undesirable side-effects. Prolonged use of this particular class of drugs may actually hasten the progression of arthritic disease. Certain studies have shown that NSAIDs inhibit the process of cartilage repair in that they impede the synthesis of the collegen matrix (Newman, 11). Ironically the disease mechanisms which cause osteoarthritis are actually boosted by the use of NSAID drugs'.

In addition to giving useful information on Cetyl Mysristoleate and how it works, plus some short case studies and testimonials by users of CMO, the author also lists and explains the value of what she calls Bioenhancing Agents, which, she says, could be useful in a therapeutic strategy to tackle arthritis – 'Several other nutritional supplements exist which serve to augment CMO therapy nicely. These are all substances which have documented theraputic properties for the treatment of joint inflammation. Anyone who suffers from arthritis or related deseases should incorporate a nutritional strategy based on the use of certain dietary supplements and foods.' This section includes a few paragraphs on recommended foods as well as which foods should be avoided by people with arthritis.

Managing and Preventing Arthritis: The Natural Alternatives
George Redmon

Although written by an American author, and therefore US-focused, particularly in the lists of useful contacts, this is a very informative and holistic book on the topic of preventing and managing arthritis. The author describes in very understandable terms the causes of arthritis, and then presents his view of how to manage and prevent the disease. He offers sound advice on life-style and diet, focussing particularly on the need for anti-oxidents and offers advice on appropriate therapies for tackling arthritic conditions. There is a section in the book on Cetyl Myristoleate as an alternative natural therapy for the treatment of arthritis.
