Joint health can affect the very nature and quality of life and the lives of those you care for. That's why Response Products Inc. is committed to bringing you the highest quality, most innovative health products on the market. Following below are some of the more frequently asked questions we hear, and their answers.
What is cetyl myristoleate? Cetyl myristoleate is a unique esterified fatty acid with unique properties that have been shown to support joint health, function and mobility. Dr. Harry Diehl discovered its unique joint health properties while working at the National Institute of Health. Cetyl myristoleate is derived from myristoleic acid, which occurs naturally in the African Kombo Nut (wild nutmeg), whale fat and beef tallow.
Can’t our bodies simply make their own cetyl myristoleate from other foods?
Unfortunately not. For most animals, including dogs, horses and people, cetyl myristoleate must come from an outside source—and it works because of its unique molecular structure.
How does cetyl myristoleate work? The precise mechanisms and metabolic pathways that apply to cetyl myristoleate in supporting and maintaining joint health are not fully known. Empirical data, however, has clearly demonstrated the positive role this powerful fatty acid can play in joint health for people and companion animals.
In her book CMO: Cetyl Myristoleate – A natural treatment for arthritis and other joint-related diseases' Rita Elkins says 'When CMO is taken in oral form, it is absorbed through the intestinal tract and migrates via the blood stream to joint receptor sites where it becomes attached. While the exact physiological mechanisms involved in CMO therapy are not fully understood, it appears that this compound actually alters the immune system response that triggers joint inflammation and causes pain and swelling. The presence of CMO within the affected joints seems to block the inflammatory response, resulting in a cessation of pain and a decrease in swelling'.
Animals with arthritis, hip dysplasia, joint injuries etc. may all benefit from the additional joint health supporting properties of cetyl myristoleate. We encourage you to also read some of the many unsolicited testimonials from customers here.

How long until these joint health products starts working? They start 'working' right away, even though it takes a period of time for their effects to become evident. There are a number of factors that affect this start-up period, including age, formula, feeding quantity and the condition of the joint tissues to start with. The CM Response® and Advanced Cetyl M® formulas support joint tissues and function at the cellular level. For each formula, the recommended time and feeding quantity for the initial "loading" period and subsequent maintenance programme are based on averages. In nature, of course, there is no such thing as "average." Be sure to monitor the condition closely and adjust as necessary to help ensure optimum results.
For people: Plan on approximately 7-14 days for the effects of the CM Response® capsule to become evident, depending on the situation. The effects of the topical cream are more immediate and may be evident within 24 hours.
For horses: Plan on 2-3 weeks for the effects of the Advanced Cetyl M® formula for horses to become evident, depending on the situation. The effects of the topical cream are more immediate and may be evident within days.
For dogs: Plan on 2-3 weeks for the effects of the Advanced Cetyl M® formula for dogs to become evident, depending on the situation.
How long should I use these products for myself, my horse or my dog? The answer to this question is impossible to know with certainty, depending on a number of variables. For best results, regular and daily use is recommended as provided on the product label to support and sustain joint health. You may choose to increase the maintenance dosage when activity and stress levels are high or after an injury has occurred. All formulas are designed so they may help ease the aching and discomfort that often result from heavy activity, training and competition.
Are there any side effects? There are no known side effects with Advanced Cetyl M® Joint Action Formula. All ingredients are naturally occurring and formulated to enhance joint function. There are no synthetic compounds, drugs or medications of any kind in Advanced Cetyl M® Joint Action Formula.
Will these products interfere with other medications? Doctors and veterinarians have been using and prescribing the Advanced Cetyl M® and CM Response® formulas to support joint health and performance without restriction and without incident since their introduction in 1998. But, as with all health supplements, we recommend you always consult your doctor or vet before adding it to your or your animal's diet, particularly if your pet has a dietary condition.
Do I need to worry about a possible allergic reaction?
If you or your animal has a known allergy, we recommend you check the ingredient list carefully with your doctor or vet beforehand. The glucosamine used in the CM Response® and Advanced Cetyl M® formulas is derived from shellfish, which may be of concern to people allergic to shellfish. Should you or your animal develop a reaction to any product, always contact your doctor or vet immediately.
Do I have to feed a 'loading' amount if my horse or dog is already on glucosamine? Yes. Cetyl myristoleate effects and acts upon joint tissues in ways that are unique to cetyl myristoleate – and different from glucosamine. One does not work as a substitute for the other. In Advanced Cetyl M® Joint Action Formula, cetyl myristoleate and Glucosamine HCL work in together with other joint-enhancing ingredients to deliver the greatest benefit to your animal. We recommend an initial 'loading' amount be administered 10-30 days for horses, depending on the age of the animal and the severity of the condition, and 4-6 weeks for dogs. The recommended 'loading' period and feeding level are based on averages. In nature, of course, there is no such thing as 'average.' Be sure to monitor your animal's condition and adjust as may be necessary to help ensure optimum results. Older animals may take longer to respond.
